Documents & Pictures

Since the first cave painting 40,000 years ago, humans have both documented and created reality through image-making. This theme runs through art history, whether we are talking about a 16th century still life or a collage.

Now we live in the Instagram era, which blurs the line between reality and pictorial fiction to a degree never before seen. A vacation snapshot is also a shoe advertisement and a carefully edited addition to the personal brand. I've had "Cafe 11" accepted to this show that explores three tendencies: works that reflect reality, works that create fictions, and works that mediate the two. 40 diverse 2D pieces of art were juried.

The San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild presents the show "Documents & Pictures." Held at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Rd, Poway, CA 92064. The show runs, February 1-28, 2017. The opening reception is, February 4, 2017. 2-4 PM, and your invited. The event is free and refreshments will be served.

  1. Can I get a copy of the 1963 Mickey Pleasant Sprite at Del Mar photo? I knew Mick pretty well in those days. He helped me rebuild a Morris in those when he worked at Westcott Motors. I sort of crewed for him and his Sprite a couple of times at Del Mar. dhowell6@comcast.net
